Elizabeth Leatherbarrow - artist.

Upper Hutt artist, Elizabeth Leatherbarrow, has been exhibiting regularly in the Wellington area for over 30 years. Her father, William Barclay, a watercolourist, was a close friend of Peter McIntyre and they painted regularly together in the Western Desert during World War II.

 

She was greatly inspired by the art of both of them and grew up surrounded by paintings.She has studied under John Crump, Larry Blovits, Heather Emsley and Jacky Pearson. While she works in watercolour and pastel, her main passion is pastel. She is a member of PANZ (Pastel Artists of New Zealand) and also Watercolour New Zealand.

She was awarded first prize for Landscape/Seascape in the Paraparaumu Rotary Art Show Competition in 2007 and has also won many awards in the Upper Hutt Art Society competitions. She has also exhibited at The National Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington

and done commission work.

 

Landscapes, flower studies and still lifes are her favourite subjects. Her paintings display her love of colour and the way light affects a subject. She also enjoys the challenge of portraits. Her work has been influenced by Rembrandt, and the work of the Impressionists, mainly Degas, Renoir and Monet. She also holds occasional  workshops in pastel and watercolour.

 

Apart from her fine arts endeavours, she has done textile design work for the local and tourist markets and was commissioned to design 15 banner and altar cloth designs for St. John’s Anglican Church, Trentham. Her work is represented at the Lewis Paape Gallery, Lower Hutt.
